Irony and Coincidence
August 21, 2009Just a quick lesson about the difference between irony and coincidence:
Typically, I describe this scenario to my students - If a person on a plane has a heart attack, and there just happens to be a heart surgeon on the plane to help, that is coincidence. However, if the heart surgeon on the plane has the heart attack, that is irony. We don’t expect a surgeon versed in the heart and diseases of the heart to actually have the heart attack. It is what we don’t expect. Therefore, it is irony.
